The turnaround is tight and the travel is on, but the arena is familiar now. Collingwood heads back down to Brisbane to take on the Firebirds this Tuesday night. The team came out scorching hot in round two, but ultimately fell to the supershot in both their losses to the Lightning and Vixens.

The key midcourt matchups here are Gabi Simpson on Madi/Kelsey Browne. Simpson has been on a mission to prove herself worthy of a Diamonds recall and looks to prove that. The midcourt speed for the Magpies is going to be an advantage here; coupled with the experience of the Browne sisters, expect to see whizzbang passes from the transverse into Nelson’s stretchy hold.

In our last game against Firebirds, Nelson shot 90% on 45/50 shooting. Expect Rob Wright to utilise the rolling subs to keep the sniping efforts from Sinclair and Allen fresh and to rotate in and out the post holding efforts of Emma Ryde. However, care must be taken for the active defensive efforts of Ellis, Jenner, and Hinchcliffe from Firebirds.

Defensively for the Magpies, their experience is important to note. It will be up to Geva Mentor to settle and hold out the front space preventing Romelda from capturing any lobs. Keep an eye on the circle edge as we should see Ward try to put the clamps on the shooting rhythms of Dwan and Vente. If the Magpies can prevent that frontside push-and-pass and disrupt passing passages the game is theirs for the taking.
