Collingwood co-captain Geva Mentor has today signed a fresh deal that will stay in the black and white until 2021.

The club’s 2019 best and fairest winner played a complete season last year and tallied the second most deflections (86) and defensive rebounds (33) for goal defenders in the league.

In the same year, the 35-year-old earned her 146th test cap, after winning national selection to share in the English Roses World Cup campaign that finished with a bronze medal.

Earlier, Mentor was awarded an order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2019 New Year honours list for distinguished contribution to international netball.

Since joining with Collingwood, the champion goal-keeper has taken the court in the starting seven line-up for every game to date.

Mentor has played 24 matches for the Pies, after crossing from the Sunshine Coast Lightning at the end of the 2018 season. She has played a total of 186 games.

Mentor has led the side for two consecutive seasons in company with Madi Browne. The news comes one day after her fellow co-captain called time on her Super Netball career.

Season 2020 has seen a younger, inexperienced group, with six of the 13 squad members pushing to make their debut with Collingwood. The co-captain has been a mentor in more ways than one. She has a role to play, not only as a world-class defender, but to usher through the next wave of young talent.

Mentor joins Kelsey Browne, Ash Brazill and Shimona Nelson as contracted players with Collingwood for the 2021 season.

With the Super Netball league’s Collective Player Agreement (CPA) finishing at the end of 2021, clubs are only able to sign players on one-year deals.

Collingwood’s 2021 squad will be finalised by December.

Collingwood’s GM of Women’s Sport, Jane Woodlands-Thompson, congratulated Mentor.

“We are thrilled to have retained Geva for next year,” Woodlands-Thompson said.

“Geva’s wealth of experience and leadership qualities have been crucial for this year’s new-look, younger squad.

“Since her arrival at the Holden Centre Geva has proven to be a true asset for the club’s netball program. We look forward to seeing her in the black and white for another season.”

In other contract news, South Australian Tyler Orr will join the squad as a replacement player in the Pies’ midcourt.

Orr will join the team tomorrow when the Pies travel to Adelaide ahead of their round 10 match against the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Sunday.
