Collingwood faces the West Coast Fever for the second time on Tuesday evening. Their previous tussle in round four saw the two teams come down to the wire.
The Magpies midcourt showed phenomenal defensive effort on Saturday with Melissa Bragg having a field day being a complete disruption against the attacking efforts of the Swifts. That same electric energy will need to slow the Fever attackers who thrive on lob passes into Jhaniele Fowler and push the ball wide before slowly grinding their way to the post.
Jodi-Ann Ward’s athleticism and Geva Mentor’s deflective abilities will be critical in shutting down the Fever’s passing passages. However, it’s not just disrupting lobs into Fowler, it’s also putting the clamps on the Fever’s wide rotation of shooters who can gain that hot hand and bomb in shots.
Offensively, in round four Shimona Nelson was a stellar force in holding her own under the post. It’s something that will have to continue coming up against Courtney Bruce and her ability to gain ball from risky passes. Gabby Sinclair will need to use her confidence in her circle drives and manage her position against the Fever’s fast defensive rotations.
The Fever capitalise on their speed and ability to hunt for the incoming ball, so it will be vital for the Magpies attack end to be patient with their passes, avoid pushing long passes on the high and low side of the court, and drive into open space.
