The Collingwood Magpies have named their leadership team for 2019, with veterans Madi Robinson and Geva Mentor appointed as co-captains for the upcoming season.
Having been named as the Magpies’ inaugural captain in 2017, Madi Robinson will continue to lead in the black and white for her third consecutive season.
Alongside her, English-born defender and former Sunshine Coast Lightning captain Geva Mentor will lead in her first year at the Holden Centre.
Having captained the Lighting to dual premierships, Mentor brings great knowledge and success as a leader.
Also new to the club is energetic mid-courter Kelsey Browne, who will support the pair as vice-captain.
Her hard work on court recently saw her awarded a position on the Australian Diamonds team where she competed in both the 2018 Quad Series and Constellation Cup.
Collingwood’s General Manager of Women’s Sport, Jane Woodlands-Thompson, acknowledged that with this year’s World Cup in July as well as the extended season, the co-captaincy model is the best solution in sharing the responsibility across the playing group.
“The club felt that for this year, due to having two world-class candidates with differing leadership specialisations, a model of co-captains was the best fit for our team,” Woodlands-Thompson said.
“Madi Robinson has been part of the Magpies Netball journey since its inception and is extremely connected to our Collingwood values and expectations.
“The club has great confidence in Madi, Geva and Kelsey to place the pies in a position of success for the 2019 season.”
The Magpies will kick off their season when they meet the Lightning on Saturday 27 April at Melbourne Arena.
