Last weekend saw all five Collingwood teams take home a win, including our Magpies Netball team who also achieved their first home game victory, 64 to 45 against the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Hisense Arena.
The team came out with all guns blazing to secure a seven-goal lead at quarter time.
Goal Shooter, Caitlin Thwaites again dominated in the goal circle. Her flawless accuracy saw her miss only one goal the entire match, notably why she was awarded Most Valuable Player.
She said, "I think it was just a little brain fade, I think it might have been an air ball too.”
Cody Lange returned to the court for her second SSN match and provided some great options within the ring and achieved ten goals.
A fifteen point lead at half-time saw Alice Teague-Neeld return to the court and produce eight goals.
The final quarter saw further changes from both sides with the Thunderbirds Head Coach, Dan Ryan change every position on the court. Most notably, Erin Bell moved out of the ring and into Wing Attack.
The Magpies saw Shae Brown jump into Centre, whilst Kim Ravaillion moved into Wing Attack.
Michaela Wilson also made her Suncorp Super Netball debut, replacing April Brandley in Goal Defence.
The Magpies’ mid-court was also on fire with Ash Brazill blazing across the court to receive nine centre passes and four intercepts.
Sharni Layton's experience truly shone at the Thunderbirds’ goaling end. Her five deflections and eight intercepts were integral to the Magpies’ win.
Whilst the win has secured the Magpies’ fifth position on the ladder, Thwaites acknowledges that, “next week’s game will definitely be a challenge, but we look forward to it.”
“We are always trying to fine-turn and hopefully under pressure we can stand up.”
“We understand the reality that it is a long season and next week is another challenge.”
Round 5 will again be another tough match when our Magpies take on the Sunshine Coast Lightning at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday 18 March at 7.45pm. This match is part of a double header and will follow the Queensland Firebirds and Melbourne Vixens match.
