Magpies Netball v Melbourne Vixens

After the longest pre-season in the history of netball, Suncorp Super Netball is back.

The Magpies and the Vixens will launch the 2018 season, going head-to-head in #TheBattle on Saturday afternoon at Hisense Arena.

Both teams will be vying to kick off the season with a win, so you can expect a fast-paced and electric contest between the two arch-rivals.

It’s that time of the year again.

Cross-town rivals go head-to-head.

The city of Melbourne divides.

It’s the Vixens and the Magpies. It’s #TheBattle.

In the second instalment of #TheBattle, the Melbourne Vixens claimed a season sweep over the Magpies, defeating Collingwood 56-60 at Hisense Arena.

In front of a crowd of 7000, the game was played at a frantic pace, right from the first centre-pass.

Madi Robinson was prolific in the middle with 17 goal assists and 36 circle feeds, while Liz Watson guided the Vixens’ mid-court with 21 goal assists, one deflection and one interception.

For the Magpies, the shooting circle rotated between Caitlin Thwaites (43/47), Cody Lange (7/9) and Shae Brown (6/7), while the Vixens’ Mwai Kumwenda (33/35) and Tegan Phillip (27/32) steered their team to victory.

  • From friends to foes: It was only two weeks ago that Caitlin Thwaites and Jo Weston were roommates and teammates for the Australian Diamonds at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. On Saturday, they’ll be fierce competitors at Hisense Arena when they kick off the 2018 SSN season. Both elite at their craft, this match-up will be one that you will not want to miss. They say defence wins premierships, but Thwaites was the best shooter in the league in 2017. Who will win out on Saturday?
  • Slayton returns: After taking a break from the game at the end of the 2017 season, Sharni Layton will return to the netball court for the Magpies. One of the games' biggest attractions (and loudest voices) will be raring to go alongside her Magpie teammates.
  • Sam Gooden: For the past two years, Sam Gooden has donned the Black and White as a Collingwood training partner and Tasmanian Magpie. But on Saturday, the 21-year-old will wear the green, blue and red after crossing to the Vixens. With an injury to Emma Ryde, Gooden was offered a SSN playing contract as a permanent injury replacement player. Go well, Sammy. Just not too well.
  • The Rivalry: In 2017, the Vixens had the Magpies' number. This year, we’re out to settle the score. #TheBattle is never over. #TheBattle has just begun.
