Magpies Netball’s state-affiliate, the Tasmanian Magpies, have confirmed their extended squad set to tackle the Australian Netball League (ANL) in 2018.
The squad of 19 is comprised of some of Tasmania’s most talented netballers, with the six Victorian-based Collingwood training partners rounding out the side.
The Magpies will be boosted by the return of seven players from their inaugural campaign, including local netball star, Shelby Miller.
Joining Miller for a second season in the Black and White stripes are training partners Sharni Lambden, Mary Livesey and Sam Gooden.
The squad will boast a few new faces in 2018, with former Melbourne Vixens training partner Kelsie Rainbow and Queensland Fusion midcourter Vanessa Augustini joining the squad.
Furthermore, 23-year-old goal attack, Cody Lange, will join the program after playing with Collingwood's SSN side in 2017. Lange will look to work her way back from her second serious knee injury in two years.
The Tasmanian Magpies will kick off its 2018 season against the Western Sting in Perth in May.
The squad, set to be coached by the newly appointed duo of Kate Upton (Head Coach) and Claire Dennis (Assistant Coach), will be looking to improve on its sixth-placed finish when it takes the court next year.
Netball Tasmania chief executive Aaron Pidgeon said the 2018 ANL squad would provide a major stepping stone towards the future of netball in Tasmania.
“We’ve really focused on looking to the future with our Tasmanian athletes for 2018. It’s a young, inexperienced group, but we believe in the potential for a very bright future for this team,” Pidgeon told Magpies Netball this week.
“The athletes will benefit immensely from playing in the high calibre ANL competition.
“They will also learn a great deal from the Collingwood training partners who are a great group that will set the right standards and be fantastic role models for the younger girls.
“We’re really excited about what the program will do for the future of Netball in Tasmania, whilst being equally excited about how competitive we expect this team to be in 2018.”
Collingwood will continue to strengthen its partnership with the Tasmanian Government and Netball Tasmania in 2018, with a host of appearances pencilled in for the new year.
Collingwood’s SSN team will fly to Hobart in February for two practice matches against the Giants, before returning in round six of the 2018 season to face the Queensland Firebirds in a rematch in Launceston.
In the 2018 ANL season, the Tasmanian Magpies will split its home games between Hisense Arena and Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne and and the Silverdome in Launceston.
The final squad will be announced in February.
